Start an online business with AI

Start an online business with AI: a real problem, a real product, real customers.

There is a version of this that is a scam: pick a trend, generate content, hope. And there is a version that works: find a problem people already pay to solve, build a small product or service for it with AI, test whether anyone wants it before you invest, and then grow it from what customers tell you. This page is the second version, in the order you would actually do it, with the honest timelines.

Free to start. The full step-by-step is on start a business with AI.

Choose the problem

Online businesses that work for one person start with a problem, not a product

The question is not "what can I build with AI?" but "what do people already pay to get rid of, that AI now lets me solve cheaply?" Four shapes fit one person with AI.

ShapeWhat it isExampleFirst revenue
A small software toolOne job done well, subscription or one-time price.Invoice reminders for agencies; a quote calculator for one trade.Weeks: after a first version and ten conversations.
A productised serviceYou do a defined job with AI, at a fixed price, repeatedly.Bookkeeping cleanup; review replies for restaurants; proposal writing.Days: you can sell it before you automate it.
A digital productSomething made once, sold many times.A template pack, a calculator, a guide for one niche.Weeks: needs an audience or a channel.
A content businessAn audience around a topic, monetised by products, sponsors or services.A newsletter for one profession.Months: the slowest, and the most durable.
Which one first

If you need income soon, start with the productised service; it tells you what the software should be. If you have savings and a clear tool idea, build the tool. Digital products and content are better second businesses than first ones.

The order

Six steps, in the order that does not waste months

  1. Pick a customer you can reach

Not a market; a kind of person you can name ten of. Your own profession, your old industry, a community you are already in. Distance from the customer is the most common reason online businesses fail.

  2. Find what they pay for today

Ask ten of them what they do about the problem now, what it costs, what they have tried. Put the notes in a Project. The validation ladder covers this in detail.

  3. Make the smallest thing that does the job

A service you deliver by hand with AI, or a tool with one screen. Weeks, not months. Building software and digital products have their own guides.

  4. Test demand before you polish

A landing page that asks for an email or a deposit. A pre-sale to the ten people you talked to. If nobody commits, change the offer, not the design.

  5. Put it online under your own name

Your domain, your hosting or store account, your payment processor. Nothing about the business should depend on a platform you do not control.

  6. Grow from what customers tell you

Every support email, review and cancellation goes back into the Project. The business improves weekly. The launch page covers the first weeks; the marketing plan covers what follows.

What it costs

Money and time, honestly

Money: typically a few hundred to about $1,500 for the first three months. Domain, hosting, an AI workspace, payment fees, a professional look at your terms. A line-by-line table is on the start a business page.

Time: five to ten hours a week for eight to twelve weeks to reach a launched product with first users. A productised service can earn sooner; a content business takes longer. Anyone promising income in a week is selling a course, not a business.

What AI changes, and what it does not

AI removes the cost of building: the software, the copy, the documents, the research. It does not remove the need for a customer who wants the thing. Spend the time you saved on building talking to customers instead.

Free is the start. The latest models are the difference.

Choosing the right problem is a judgement call. Make it with the best judgement available.

The decisions on this page are the expensive ones: which customer, which shape of business, whether the demand test passed. Older and smaller models give generic encouragement; the latest models, with your customer notes and competitor material in the Project, give specific and sometimes unwelcome answers. That is what you want before you commit months.

Newer models hold your whole Project in view instead of the last few messages, reason through trade-offs instead of picking the first plausible answer, and are wrong less often and with less confidence. For the questions on this page, that is the difference between advice that sounds right and advice you can act on.

Honest answers

What people ask

Can I start an online business with AI and no money?

Nearly. A productised service needs a domain and an AI workspace; the rest is time. A software tool costs a few hundred over three months. What you cannot skip is the time to talk to customers.

What is the fastest online business to start with AI?

A productised service for a customer you already know: you sell it this week and deliver it with AI. It also teaches you what the software version should do.

Is it too late? Everyone is doing AI now.

Everyone is doing generic AI. Almost nobody is solving the specific problem of the specific customer you know. That gap is the business.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Services need no code; tools can be built with AI, screen by screen, with a second AI checking. See building an app with AI.

How is MultipleChat different from using ChatGPT for this?

The business lives in a Project that every model reads, so nothing is re-explained, and several models check each other on the decisions that cost months. See Projects.
